What are Dental Implants?

An implant is a simple, affordable way to replace a missing tooth or multiple missing teeth. It’s important to understand the anatomy of an implant to realize why it makes such a great tooth replacement. There are three main parts to a dental implant:
•  The first part is the implant body, which is the replacement root that is put down into the jawbone. Once it is allowed to heal we can build on top of it.
•  The second portion that is built directly on top of the implant body is called the abutment. The abutment can have many different shapes and colors. We customize them to create a natural-looking tooth.
•  The abutment is then covered over with a crown that has the appearance, shape, and function of a normal tooth.

What’s the Procedure for Getting a Dental Implant?

There are a few steps in the process to have a dental implant replace a missing tooth or missing teeth.

Pre-Operative Planning

The first step is always the most important: pre-operative planning. At Kurt A. Gibson, DDS, PA we use a 3D cone beam machine to take a 3D image of your jaws. This is to make sure you have the correct amount of bone, to determine the size of the implant and where to place it.

Surgical Implant Placement

Once we’ve made these decisions, the next step is the surgical procedure. The implant is placed into the jawbone, and then there’s a healing period. This period varies from person to person. Some people heal very quickly and have the abutment and crown placed within about three months, while in other patients it takes about six months. We will customize that treatment to meet your specific needs.

Osseointegration and Restoration

Once the implant has healed, it has accomplished what we call osseointegration. Osseointegration is where the bone of your jaws locks into the threads of your implant body and holds it in place, giving it a stable foundation so that it can support the function of chewing. Once osseointegration has occurred, then we place the implant abutment and the implant crown on top.

What are the Benefits of Dental Implants?

There are lots of long-term benefits of dental implants:
•  A dental implant has the highest long-term success rate of any dental procedure
•  Implants are the most natural and cosmetic option for tooth replacements
•  The implant process is used to replace either one or many missing teeth
•  Implants look, feel and are used just like normal teeth.
•  They provide you with a beautiful smile, restoring your quality of life!

Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Dental implants are used to remedy a wide variety of tooth loss issues, and we can help determine whether they’re the best choice for you. If you meet all of the following criteria, you are most likely a candidate:
•  You’ve suffered tooth loss, or you need to have one or more teeth pulled
•  You are out of your early 20s, which is the period when the jaw stops growing
•  You are in good health overall, which includes oral health
•  You either don’t smoke or are willing to quit smoking
•  You have enough bone mass in which to place the implants
